Return Plane Inductance and EMC

A return plane (or ground plane) can develop a voltage along its length causing attached cables to radiate. This "common mode" radiation is one of the principal causes of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and electromagnetic interference (EMI) problems in digital devices.
